The purchasing task is to obtain the correct publication and a precise material brief. This guide does not select a steel grade for a structure.
Edition and revision check
EN 10025-2:2019 is the published Genorma record checked on 7 October 2026. EVS identifies the same European edition. Genorma records a revision project, but the 2019 document remains listed as published; a project is not a replacement edition. Genorma record; EVS catalogue.
Include the full reference in the order. If a drawing or contract uses an earlier edition, have the responsible specifier resolve that baseline before changing the material documentation.
Choose by product form as well as grade
The public scope addresses hot-rolled non-alloy steel flat and long products and relevant semi-finished products. It excludes structural hollow sections and tubes. Product dimensions, grades and delivery conditions have defined boundaries in the licensed text. Source: Genorma scope.
| Area | Question to resolve |
|---|---|
| Material delivery | Does the product form and specified material fit Part 2? |
| Dimensions | Which dimensional and tolerance references belong in the order? |
| Fabrication | Which separate execution requirements govern the subsequent work? |
| Structural design | Who selects the grade and properties needed for the application? |
The material standards guide provides the wider product map. For fabrication planning, see the separate EN 1090-2 guide.
Make the material enquiry unambiguous
Prepare an order schedule identifying the product form, dimensions, quantity, complete grade and quality designation, delivery condition and relevant drawing. Ask the specifier to identify any additional choices or options before accepting the supplier’s stock description.
- Designation: is the full material identity recorded rather than only a headline strength value?
- Product boundary: does the offered plate, section or semi-finished product fit the selected standard?
- Delivery condition: does the quotation state the condition agreed by the responsible specifier?
- Inspection evidence: which document type and material identification will accompany delivery?
- Traceability: how will material identifiers be retained when stock is cut, transferred or used in fabrication?
These are original procurement questions. Obtain chemical, mechanical and dimensional requirements from the licensed documents. A buyer should not infer equivalence between different quality suffixes or delivery conditions from similar prices.
Agree how substitutions are authorised. If the supplier cannot provide the exact specified stock, request a clearly identified alternative and have the responsible reviewer decide whether it is acceptable. Keep the decision with the order instead of letting a verbal change disappear into the delivery paperwork.
A fictional plate substitution
A fabricator orders plate using a drawing’s full material designation. A stockholder offers a similar strength grade with a different quality designation and supplies a sample inspection document for another thickness.
The buyer separates the offered material from the original specification. The designer or material specifier reviews the alternative, while the stockholder identifies the actual product, delivery condition and documents that would accompany it. The purchase order is changed only after that review is recorded.
The decision is to obtain an explicit material match before comparing prices. This example is fictional and makes no claim that the proposed steel is suitable for welding, fatigue or a particular structure.
Purchase the publication
Confirm the edition, language, format and user licence with the merchant. Genorma confirms the available document options and final checkout price.
Frequently asked questions
Does Part 2 cover structural hollow sections?
The published scope excludes them and tubes. Select the appropriate product document for the actual material.
Does one strength value establish equivalent steel?
No. Review the complete designation, product form and delivery information against the application and specification.
Is an inspection document the same as buying the standard?
No. The standard provides requirements; the delivery evidence relates to the supplied material. Match both to the order.
