What is a European Standard (EN)?

A European Standard is a technical document adopted by a recognised European standards organisation. National standards bodies normally implement an EN as an identical national standard and withdraw conflicting national standards. The standard itself is generally voluntary unless legislation, a contract or another binding requirement makes its use necessary.

What is the difference between EN, ISO, IEC and ETSI standards?

EN identifies a European Standard. ISO and IEC publish international standards, while ETSI develops standards for information and communications technologies. A document such as EN ISO 9001 is an ISO standard adopted as a European Standard. Always check the complete reference and current edition.

What is a harmonised European standard?

A harmonised standard is a European Standard prepared following a European Commission standardisation request and cited in the Official Journal for particular EU legislation. Correct use may provide a presumption of conformity for the requirements covered by the citation. The exact edition, limitations and dates must be verified in the applicable official source.

Are European standards legally mandatory?

Standards are usually voluntary technical tools. Legal obligations come from legislation, contracts or other binding instruments. A manufacturer may sometimes use an alternative technical solution, but it must still demonstrate that the applicable legal requirements are met.

Where can I obtain the official text of a standard?

Obtain licensed standards from an authorised national standards body or another authorised distributor. European-Standards.com supports discovery and navigation but does not reproduce the protected full text of standards.

How do I verify that I have the current edition?

Check the official catalogue record for the publication date, amendments, corrigenda, withdrawal status and replacement documents. For harmonised standards, also verify the current Official Journal citation, transition dates and any restrictions.
