Edition status: ISO publication, EN adoption and certification are different checks
At the source check on 7 September 2026, ISO's catalogue lists ISO 14001:2026, fourth edition, published in April 2026. The same record identifies the 2015 edition and its 2024 amendment as withdrawn. Verify the current ISO catalogue record.
That ISO publication record does not establish every national EN adoption date or your certificate's transition deadline. Check the applicable national standards-body record for the full EN ISO designation and ask your certification body for the arrangements affecting your certificate. What the standard supports
ISO describes the standard as a framework for an environmental management system and continual improvement of environmental performance. Third-party certification is a separate choice or requirement arising from a particular arrangement; ISO itself does not certify your organisation. Read ISO's scope and certification explanation.

Build a useful edition-check record
Write down the complete reference used in your current system, the catalogue source checked, amendments already incorporated, relevant certificate details and the contact responsible for clarifying the transition. Attach the original evidence rather than replacing historical references without explanation.
Then ask your certification body which edition it can audit against, which transition instructions apply, how its timetable affects your surveillance or recertification cycle, and what information it needs from you. Record the written answer and its date.
Plan the work before changing documents
- Agree the scope of the edition review and identify a responsible owner.
- Obtain the correct licensed publications and applicable scheme instructions.
- Compare the relevant requirements with the system actually in operation.
- Record gaps, actions, evidence, owners and completion dates.
- Review implementation effectiveness before representing the organisation as meeting a new edition.
A new date on a procedure cover is not evidence that the underlying process was assessed. Likewise, a public guide or catalogue title cannot determine whether a particular certificate remains valid.
