For buyers, its value is understanding the product route and the supporting evidence. It should not be used as a blanket label for every fabricated metal item.
Which record should you order?
EN 1090-1:2009+A1:2011 is the published Genorma record checked on 7 October 2026. BSI lists its corresponding adoption as current and under review. Genorma also identifies a revision project in development; a draft project is not the published replacement. Genorma record; BSI catalogue.
Keep the complete reference in the order. Record any different edition required by a contract and ask the responsible reviewer to resolve the discrepancy.
Conformity assessment, execution and design have different roles
The public scope addresses performance characteristics of structural steel and aluminium components and kits placed on the market as construction products. It includes relevant steel components in composite construction and identifies exclusions and cases where particular specifications take precedence. Product identity and intended use therefore come before selecting the route. Source: Genorma scope.
| Area | Question to resolve |
|---|---|
| EN 1090-1 | Which conformity-assessment provisions fit the structural component? |
| Execution parts | Which technical requirements fit steel, aluminium or cold-formed work? |
| Structural design | Who supplies the design basis and project-specific execution information? |
| Legal and contractual route | Which applicable product requirements and references govern this order? |
See the EN 1090 family guide before assembling the document set.
Make supplier scope review specific
Build a component schedule showing the product description, intended structural function, materials, manufacturing location and drawing revision. Give the supplier enough information to identify the proposed evidence and any limitations before the order is finalised.
- Manufacturer and site: do the supplier documents identify the party and production location responsible for the goods?
- Product scope: can the covered components and processes be connected to the proposed order?
- Design responsibility: is it clear who supplies calculations, drawings and declared design information where relevant?
- Evidence consistency: do certificate scope, product information and delivery documents describe the same package?
- Changes: who reviews an outsourced operation, different production location or revised component before supply?
This is an original procurement checklist, not a certification audit. A competent reviewer should determine the applicable requirements and any required conformity evidence. A certificate image without an identifiable scope or validity record leaves important questions open.
Keep the outcome of that review with the purchase order. This helps the receiving team understand which package was agreed and prevents evidence collected for a previous contract from being reused without explanation.
A fictional mixed-component order
A contractor orders structural steel brackets and decorative metal panels from one workshop. The quotation places both under one “EN 1090 certified” heading.
The buyer asks the design team to identify the structural function of each item. The supplier then explains the scope of its documents for the structural package and separately identifies the basis for the decorative products. Execution information and project handover records are reviewed for the work actually supplied.
The decision is to replace the generic heading with a component-specific evidence schedule. This example is fictional; it does not decide the legal status of a real bracket, panel or workshop.
Check the current construction-product context
A Part 1 purchase does not itself establish a CE-marking obligation or complete a declaration. Check the product’s applicable route and official references. The Commission explains that the revised CPR framework transitions by product family rather than switching every product simultaneously. Commission transition guidance.

Frequently asked questions
Is Part 1 the steel execution document?
No. Review the Part 2 steel guide and Part 3 aluminium guide for those tasks.
Does the publication year make the record obsolete?
No automatic conclusion follows from age. The checked catalogue still lists the amended publication; monitor the revision project separately.
Does a general supplier certificate cover every order?
Check its actual scope and the connection to the component, site and processes. Generic wording is not sufficient evidence of coverage.

How this page is maintained
No documented technical review of this version is recorded. Sources and an update date are not a conformity assessment.
Scope: Conformity assessment of structural steel and aluminium components and kits within the published scope. Distinguishes execution, structural design and product legal route; no blanket CE obligation for metal items.
