How the EN 60601 series fits together
The international IEC publications and their European adoptions can have different reference dates and amendments. Record the complete designation used for your assessment.
| Layer | Purpose | Selection question |
|---|---|---|
| General standard: EN 60601-1 | Common basic safety and essential performance requirements | Does the equipment fall within its scope? |
| Collateral standards | Additional topics or use environments, such as electromagnetic compatibility or home healthcare | Which topics and environments apply to the intended use? |
| Particular standards | Requirements for a specific equipment type that supplement or modify the general requirements | Is there a device-specific standard, including a relevant 60601 or 80601 publication? |
The IEC catalogue for IEC 60601-1 edition 3.2 identifies the consolidated 2005 publication with its 2012 and 2020 amendments. IEC explains that the general document should not be used on its own where an applicable particular standard exists. Confirm the corresponding EN adoption separately.
Basic safety and essential performance
An assessment can involve electrical, mechanical and thermal hazards as well as functions whose loss or degradation could create unacceptable risk. Establish the relevant performance criteria and risk controls before testing. The applicable standards and the manufacturer's risk management documentation determine the detailed assessment; a generic website checklist cannot establish test limits for an individual device.
EN 60601, EU MDR and CE marking
For a device covered by the EU Medical Device Regulation, the manufacturer must meet the applicable regulatory requirements. Standards are a voluntary way to support that work. Check the exact EN reference, amendments, restrictions and coverage against the European Commission's medical-device harmonised standards publications. An OJEU-cited reference can support presumption of conformity only for the requirements it covers.
A test report or purchased standard does not, by itself, complete the MDR conformity assessment or authorise CE marking. The regulatory route, evidence and any notified-body involvement depend on the device and its classification.
Prepare a useful laboratory brief
- Describe the equipment: intended purpose, users, patient contact, accessories, power supply and use environment.
- Agree the document set: general, collateral and particular standards, complete editions and target markets.
- Define the test configuration: models, software versions, accessories and the rationale for representative samples.
- Prepare supporting evidence: drawings, component information, instructions, risk management records and performance criteria.
- Check laboratory competence: review its accreditation certificate and scope for the relevant methods. An accreditation logo alone is insufficient.
- Review the results: document deviations, corrective work, retesting needs and links to the technical documentation.
Agree the report format and intended use before commissioning work. A CB report may support particular certification or market-access processes, but it is not an automatic EU market approval.
Find the applicable standards
You can search the Genorma catalogue for EN 60601. Compare the full designation with the agreed test plan and EU references. Confirm language, amendments, licence, availability and price with the supplier before ordering.
Frequently asked questions
Is EN 60601-1 enough for every device?
No. Applicable collateral and particular standards may add to or modify the general requirements. Determine the full document set from the equipment's intended purpose and scope.
Does buying the standard provide certification?
No. The document provides requirements. Assessment, supporting evidence and any certification are separate activities.
Should the latest IEC edition always be used for EU conformity?
Check both technical suitability and the precise European references relevant to your regulatory route. A current IEC publication and an OJEU-cited EN reference are different checks.
