EN ISO 45001

EN ISO 45001

Choose EN ISO 45001 when the purchase concerns an occupational health and safety management system for the organisation’s work. The buyer’s first task is to define whose activities and workplaces the project includes. A process for managing worker risks is different from a technical assessment of whether a machine or product meets its own safety requirements.

The European designation is EN ISO 45001:2023, adopting ISO 45001:2018. Genorma also identifies the published A1:2024 climate-action amendment. The different EN and ISO years are deliberate catalogue designations, not interchangeable edition labels. European adoption record; Amendment record.

Choose the correct published document

A management-system purchase, with a clear boundary

The scope concerns occupational health and safety risks under the organisation’s control. It does not prescribe a single numerical performance target or a specific system design, and does not generally cover product safety, property damage or environmental impacts beyond the relevant worker and other-person risks. Published scope and exclusions.

For a useful procurement brief, describe the workforce, sites, contractors and changes that the system must address. Ask what operational involvement the provider expects from supervisors and workers. A package that relies on someone completing forms at headquarters may be unsuitable for a business whose most important decisions happen on temporary sites.

Questions that distinguish competing offers

An original OH&S project comparison
SituationQuestion for the proposed service
Multiple sitesHow will site-specific information reach the people managing the system?
Contractor workWhich responsibilities and interfaces are included in the agreed scope?
Worker involvementWhat participation is needed from the people doing and supervising the work?
Incident informationHow will existing reports and follow-up actions be used in the project?
New equipment or activitiesWho will review changes before the operating arrangements are revised?

Ask providers to identify the inputs they expect from you and any work they exclude. A quotation for a preliminary gap review should not be compared directly with a quotation that includes implementation support and staff workshops. Separating the stages makes it easier to budget and to decide whether the organisation can maintain the resulting system after the provider leaves.

Example: a maintenance company with mobile teams

Imagine a maintenance business whose staff work at customer facilities. Its office documentation is organised, but teams receive different site instructions and may work alongside other contractors. A buyer looking only for a standard manual could miss the practical issue: how information and responsibilities change from one job to the next.

The company could ask bidders to trace a proposed job from quotation to mobilisation and completion. Who obtains the site information? Who decides whether the team has what it needs? Who can stop or change the work? How does feedback reach the next job planner? These are original procurement questions, not a complete safety procedure or a finding that the work is safe.

An organisational quality system is covered by EN ISO 9001; environmental management by EN ISO 14001. If you are procuring certification services, EN ISO/IEC 17021-1 addresses a different organisation: the management-system certification body.

ISO still identifies ISO 45001:2018 as published and lists its 2024 amendment. Its next revision is shown as a draft under development. Do not buy or describe that draft as the current replacement just because the publisher discusses an expected future edition. Published standard, amendment and next-version status.

Common purchase questions

Is EN ISO 45001:2023 a different ISO revision from ISO 45001:2018?

The Genorma relation identifies the European document as adopting ISO 45001:2018. Match the exact designation required by the contract and include the amendment treatment rather than choosing solely by the newer-looking year.

Does buying the standard include an OH&S certificate?

The document, implementation work and certification assessment are separate purchases. ISO describes certification as an optional third-party route; ask any service provider to explain its role and the scope of its offer. ISO certification explanation.
