What does IEC 60598-1 cover?
IEC 60598-1:2024 addresses general safety for luminaires incorporating electric light sources, with supply voltages up to 1,000 V. Semi-luminaires are included. IEC identifies the publication as Edition 10, published on 6 November 2024, replacing the 2020 ninth edition. These details are confirmed in the IEC publication record.
For a buying decision, start by recording the complete product: mounting arrangement, supply, controlgear, light source, service access and intended environment. Give that description to the person selecting the test programme. A generic description such as “LED light” leaves too many decisions unresolved.
Choose the international or European document deliberately
| Reference | Purchasing role | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| IEC 60598-1:2024, Edition 10 | International base standard | Use when the project or assessment specifies this IEC edition. |
| EN IEC 60598-1:2024 | European publication | Check the European document and the national adoption required by the project. |
| EN IEC 60598-1:2024/A11:2024 | Separate European amendment | Confirm whether the selected supply includes this amendment or it must be ordered separately. |
Genorma lists the EN IEC 60598-1:2024 base document and A11:2024 amendment as separate published records. Do not assume that the IEC purchase includes European additions. Match the full designation in the laboratory quotation, contract and document order.
For EU conformity work, check the applicable legislation and exact Official Journal reference separately. Publication of a new standard does not establish its current legal citation. The European Commission explains the role of harmonised standards; this guide makes no claim that a particular edition currently provides presumption of conformity.
Which Part 2 should accompany Part 1?
The product type matters. Two verified examples are IEC 60598-2-1:2025 for fixed general-purpose luminaires and IEC 60598-2-2:2023 for recessed and recessed air-handling luminaires. IEC's record for Part 2-1 says its 2025 third edition replaces the 2020 edition.
Ask the laboratory which Part 2 applies and which edition pairing it will assess. Record both references on the purchase request. For European work, verify the corresponding EN references rather than converting the IEC year into an assumed EN year. A product family name alone is insufficient to select every applicable document.
What should an existing user review in the 2024 edition?
IEC's public change summary highlights a restructured document, an annex comparing the earlier structure, changes involving conductor stress and earthing, magnetic suspension, battery-powered luminaires, marking and photobiological safety. These are useful prompts for a gap review, not a complete account of the revision. See the publisher's edition summary.
If your test plan cites clauses from 2020, assign someone to map those references before reusing it. Review the design features that changed since the previous assessment, then agree any additional evidence with the laboratory. Keep the old test report and new review together so the reason for each decision remains traceable.
Set the boundaries of your purchase
Use this as a luminaire safety purchase, and specify other procurement objectives separately. Required light output, colour characteristics, energy targets, installation arrangements and commercial warranty terms should be explicit in your product brief. Ask who will select evidence for each objective; buying Part 1 does not answer every performance or market-access question.
Similarly, a driver's or LED module's documentation should be identified by its own reference and edition. Send component evidence to the assessor alongside the complete luminaire description. Let the assessor confirm what can be used for the finished assembly.
Example: ordering documents for an office lighting range
An engineering team plans a surface-mounted ceiling fitting and a recessed variant for offices. Its procurement officer receives a request for “60598” and an old report covering an earlier fitting. Before ordering, the officer asks the engineer to distinguish the two mounting arrangements, list the intended markets and identify any changes to the driver, battery option or service access.
The laboratory is then asked to confirm the general-standard edition, the relevant particular standard for each variant and any European amendments. The team orders the agreed documents and records their designations in its controlled library. The old report becomes evidence to review, rather than an automatic approval for the new range. This approach reduces avoidable document purchases and gives the test quotation a clearer scope.
Before you order
- Define the product. Include intended use, mounting, supply and important variants.
- Confirm the document set. Obtain the full Part 1 and Part 2 references from the responsible engineer or laboratory.
- Resolve regional additions. Ask whether the order needs an EN adoption, separate amendment or national publication.
- Choose appropriate access. Check whether one named user or a wider team needs licensed access.
- Record the order. Save the reference, edition, format and purchase date with the project documents.
Frequently asked questions
Is IEC 60598-1 sufficient on its own?
Confirm the applicable particular standard for your product. BSI describes using Part 1 with relevant 60598-2 standards in its luminaire safety overview. Ask the laboratory to specify the complete document set.
Should I buy the latest edition if my contract names an older one?
Resolve the difference with the contract owner and assessor first. Record whether the assignment follows the contractual edition, a revised edition or an agreed transition review. Do not silently change the reference on the purchase order.
Does A11 replace the base document?
Genorma identifies A11:2024 as an amendment linked to EN IEC 60598-1:2024. Verify whether the seller supplies a combined publication or separate files; do not buy an amendment assuming it contains the complete base text.
Does purchasing the standard certify my luminaire?
A document purchase provides access to the text. Agree the assessment, tests, documentation and any certification service separately with the responsible specialists.
