IEC 61439-1

IEC 61439-1

IEC 61439-1 is the general-rules document for low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies. The first buying decision is whether your project needs the international IEC publication or its European adoption. The second is which assembly-specific part belongs beside it. This guide helps engineers, panel builders and purchasing teams turn a vague request for “61439” into a clear document order.

What does IEC 61439-1 cover?

The IEC publication record describes general definitions, service conditions, construction, technical characteristics and verification for low-voltage assemblies. Edition 3 was published on 5 May 2020 and replaces the 2011 edition. Part 1 is used with the relevant assembly-specific part from Part 2 onwards; where Parts 3 onwards do not cover the assembly, Part 2 applies.

That relationship matters when requesting a quotation. A request for Part 1 alone may leave the intended assembly type unresolved. Give the responsible engineer or assessor a description of the completed assembly, its application and the project requirements, then obtain the full document references before purchasing.

The European seller record distinguishes the published standard and its corrections from an amendment and successor under development. A draft appearing in a catalogue is not evidence that a new edition has replaced the published document. A national prefix in your specification should also be checked deliberately rather than omitted from the order.

Keep three fields in your controlled document list: the required designation, the publication actually supplied and the correction status. This avoids an ambiguous entry such as “IEC 61439 latest” when a later reviewer needs to reconstruct the project's decisions.

Which other document should you buy?

IEC TR 61439-0:2022Guidance for specifying assembliesConsider it when preparing the purchasing specification; it is a Technical Report and does not replace the standards.

See the publisher's records for IEC 61439-2:2020 and IEC TR 61439-0:2022. Other assembly types require their own selection review. Specify the actual application before choosing a particular part, and verify the European references separately if the contract requires EN publications.

Four questions that make a better procurement brief

  1. What assembly is being purchased? Describe the complete equipment and its intended installation, rather than listing only the enclosure or individual devices.
  2. Who selects the document set? Name the engineer or assessor responsible for confirming the general and particular references.
  3. Which conditions need agreement? Give the supplier the project information needed to resolve the intended loads, environment, interfaces and operating arrangements.
  4. What evidence will be handed over? Agree the documents, configuration identification and responsibility for answering verification questions before accepting the quotation.

These are procurement prompts, not a substitute for the standard's technical requirements. Their purpose is to expose missing decisions early enough to resolve them with the people responsible for the design.

Example: replacing a factory switchboard

A factory asks a panel builder to replace a switchboard, and the purchase request simply says “compliant with IEC 61439”. The buyer should ask the project engineer to identify the assembly category, required edition and relevant particular part. The existing installation information should then be checked against the proposed replacement's intended use.

Before ordering the standards, the buyer asks whether the contract requires IEC or EN publications and whether the proposed supplier quotation uses the same references. Before ordering the assembly, the team agrees how the delivered configuration will be identified and which evidence will accompany it. If a component or arrangement later changes, the change goes back to the responsible engineer for review.

This process turns the standard reference into a shared project decision. It also separates the cost of acquiring documents from the work of designing, verifying and supplying the equipment.

Using an older design or report

If earlier project records cite the 2011 edition, preserve that context instead of silently replacing the date. Compare the contractual reference, the supplier's proposed reference and the current publication record, then record any agreed review of the difference.

IEC's public summary identifies changes involving incorporated converter equipment, group rated current and temperature-rise verification, DC requirements and protection classes. Use those topics as prompts for a competent review, rather than assuming an old evidence package automatically covers a changed assembly. The licensed text is needed to assess the actual requirements.

Check the order before paying

  • Match the complete standard designation and edition to the approved project request.
  • Confirm whether the purchase is the base publication, a correction, an amendment or a draft.
  • Check the language and the seller's description of included corrections.
  • Select licensed access suitable for the people who will use the document.
  • Record the final price and any applicable tax at checkout; catalogue prices can change.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use IEC 61439-1 on its own?

IEC's scope states that the relevant particular part is applied alongside Part 1. Ask the responsible engineer to specify the complete document set for your assembly.

Does buying the document certify an assembly?

Purchasing a standard gives access to its text. Agree design, verification, inspection and any certification service separately. A seller receipt is not an equipment assessment.

Is EN IEC 61439-1:2021 a newer international edition than IEC 61439-1:2020?

The references identify different publications. Confirm which one the contract or assessment requires and check its corrections. Do not select solely by comparing the years.

Should I order a draft amendment shown beside the standard?

Only when your project specifically needs that draft. Genorma's lifecycle separates published documents from those under development; the two serve different purchasing purposes.
