EN 12195-1

EN 12195-1

A load-securing equipment order should follow a defined transport assignment and a reviewed securing plan. EN 12195-1 is the publication to examine for calculating securing forces. It helps a buying team separate the calculation service from the purchase of straps, chains or other equipment.

Calculation and equipment are different purchases

The public scope covers design of blocking, lashing and combined securing methods for road transport, including specified combined-transport contexts. It excludes vehicles at or below 3,500 kg total weight and the identified hump-shunting case. Separate parts concern web lashings, chains and wire ropes.

Describe the load, vehicle, route context and handling arrangements to the responsible planner. Ask it to identify the necessary information and confirm the scope before commissioning calculations. The publication title alone does not determine how many restraints a particular load needs.

This table assigns purchasing responsibilities. It does not provide coefficients, formulae or a securing design. Those must be determined by the responsible team using the full information and appropriate documents.

Questions before ordering restraints

  • Has the calculation or securing-plan assignment been agreed for this load and transport arrangement?
  • Who supplies missing load and vehicle information?
  • Does the equipment quotation match the planner's identified specification?
  • What instructions and product identification are included with delivery?
  • Who reviews a changed load, packaging arrangement, vehicle or equipment substitution?

Compare equipment offers against the same accepted purchasing specification. If one supplier proposes an alternative, ask the responsible planner to review it rather than accepting a commercial description such as “equivalent strap” as the full answer.

Example: sending a machine to a customer

A machinery manufacturer needs to transport a newly built machine. The logistics buyer first receives a price for straps, but there is no agreed description of how the machine will be supported or secured. The buyer commissions a securing-plan assignment using the machine and transport information supplied by the project team.

The resulting equipment specification becomes the basis for comparing restraint quotations. The order identifies the accepted equipment and records who will review a changed vehicle or packaging arrangement. This example illustrates procurement sequencing; it does not supply a safe securing plan for a machine.

Handover to the people performing the work

Ask how the approved plan and its assumptions will reach the loading team. A calculation report kept only in the buyer's folder is less useful than a defined handover with readable identification and an escalation route for unexpected conditions.

Agree what happens when the actual load or transport setup differs from the brief. Record a responsible contact and a review process. This makes it easier for the team to raise a discrepancy instead of improvising a change without the planner's information.

Frequently asked buying questions

Does Part 1 specify the whole restraint product?

Its title is calculation of securing forces. The public scope points to separate parts for restraint equipment; ask the technical team to identify the complete package for its assignment.

Can I calculate restraint quantities from this article?

No numerical design method is provided. Commission a defined calculation or plan using the actual load and transport information.

Is this automatically the correct document for a van?

The verified scope excludes vehicles at or below its stated total-weight threshold. Have the responsible planner check the vehicle and applicable assignment rather than choosing by document number alone.
