Published European edition
Genorma lists EN 1993-1-1:2022 as published and confirmed. The BSI catalogue independently identifies the published 2022 reference. Check the offered adoption and edition against the engineer's design basis; a national implementation can have a different publication date from the European reference.
The public scope provides basic steel structural design rules with additional provisions for buildings. The project also needs a justified wider document set. This guide does not supply design equations, member capacities or rules for choosing a steel grade.
Separate design, material and execution purchases
| Task | Document role | What to obtain |
|---|---|---|
| Design the steel structure | EN 1993-1-1 supplies the general design subject. | The engineer's exact design reference set. |
| Apply the national basis | National choices relate to the works' location. | The matching national implementation and selected national information. |
| Order the steel material | Product delivery documents address the actual steel product. | The grade, product form and evidence specified for the order. |
| Fabricate and erect the steelwork | Execution documents address that work package. | The agreed execution specification and supporting records. |
The European Commission JRC explains the national choices associated with Eurocodes and their relevance to the country where the works are located. Ask the responsible engineer to state the required national basis rather than assume the purchaser's home country determines it.
Order a coherent project library
Give the engineer a description of the steelwork package and ask which additional parts are needed for its actual structural subjects. A general-rules document is not a complete answer for every connection, product type or special situation. Purchasing can maintain the resulting schedule, while the qualified designer decides which parts and editions are appropriate.
Record the document generation, national implementation, associated National Annex or other selected national information and any included amendments or corrections. Verify that the seller's offered document contains what the schedule requires. A package sold under a broad steel-design name should be checked item by item; the package's sale date does not prove that all its component editions match the project basis.
Keep the calculation basis identifiable too. Ask which set underlies the supplied design calculations and software outputs. If different consultants or subcontractors prepare parts of the design, the shared schedule helps expose inconsistent references before procurement releases a package based on incompatible assumptions.
Connect the design brief to the steelwork offer
The material order should identify the products and properties selected by the designer. A mill's product document should not be read as the structural calculation for the assembled frame. The EN 10025-2 buying guide explains the separate delivery-conditions question for its steel-product scope.
Similarly, the EN 1090-2 guide addresses steel execution rather than replacing the design basis. Put responsibilities for design information, material evidence and execution records in the contract. This makes it easier to recognise whether a supplier's document answers the question being asked.
When a bidder proposes an alternative structural arrangement, present the change to the designer before treating it as a cost saving. A modified member or connection arrangement needs a clear design response. Procurement should not infer equivalence merely because both offers name Eurocode 3 or the same material standard.
Questions before accepting the document set
- Which exact EN 1993-1-1 edition and project generation have been selected?
- Which country-specific implementation and national information are needed?
- What additional parts cover the actual structural subjects?
- Do the design calculations, material order and execution brief describe the same proposed structure?
- Who resolves an alternative arrangement or a change in the selected reference set?
A fictional tender-library decision
A developer tenders a steel building. One consultant's schedule names a newer design reference, while a bidder proposes a standards package containing older component editions and a different national basis. The purchasing team initially accepts the package because its commercial title says steel structures.
The lead designer compares the listed documents with the project basis and identifies the correct library and national information. The buyer checks the package contents before ordering and keeps material and execution documents separate in the contract. This fictional example does not decide whether a particular design generation can be used for a real project.

Common buying questions
Does EN 1993-1-1 replace EN 1090-2?
No. Design and execution documents serve different tasks in the steelwork package.
Is the newest sale listing automatically the project's design basis?
No. Confirm the actual component editions and the engineer's selected set.
Does this guide establish a universal transition deadline?
No. National implementation and project contract decisions require their own check.
