EN ISO 13849-2

EN ISO 13849-2

A control-system design file and a validation assignment need to be connected to the same delivered machine. EN ISO 13849-2 is the publication to examine for the validation subject. For a buyer, the useful task is to define what will be validated, what information is required and how the result will be handed over.

Validation connected to the design basis

The public scope describes validation by analysis and testing of specified safety functions, achieved category and achieved performance level of safety-related control-system parts designed using ISO 13849-1. The publication therefore addresses a validation assignment connected to the design subject.

Start with the machine configuration and the design information that will be available. Ask the proposed validation provider to identify gaps before scheduling the assignment. A report is easier to interpret when it names the functions and configuration it actually assessed.

Make the validation service comparable

Original validation-service purchasing questions
Work elementQuestion for the buyer
Design inputsWhich specifications, drawings and configuration information are required?
Assessed boundaryWhich safety functions and machine configuration are included?
Review of findingsWho answers queries and resolves deficiencies?
Final evidenceHow will the accepted configuration and remaining limitations be recorded?

The table helps purchasing teams define a service. It does not reproduce validation procedures or establish a required performance level. The responsible technical team must define those decisions and the appropriate evidence.

Questions before accepting the quotation

  • Does the quoted function list match the design specification?
  • Which machine drawings, component information and software versions must be provided?
  • Who supplies access and support for the agreed assessment activities?
  • What happens if the delivered configuration differs from the information supplied?
  • Does the offer include review of corrected findings and a final report?

A very short quotation can hide preparation work, repeat visits or finding closure that remains with the buyer. Ask bidders to describe these boundaries so the project budget includes the complete assignment.

Example: upgrading a machine control panel

A factory replaces a machine control panel. The installer offers new hardware and commissioning, while a separate provider is asked to validate the affected safety-related controls. Before comparing the service price, the buyer asks both parties to agree the final drawing issue, function list and configuration baseline.

The validation quotation names the information it expects and the process for dealing with findings. The purchase order reserves responsibility and time for corrections and final evidence. The example does not assess the upgraded machine; it shows how an incomplete handover can be addressed before an assessment begins.

Part 1 and Part 2 should share a configuration

The verified Part 1 European record has a different publication year. Ask the responsible team to document its chosen design and validation references rather than assuming both parts must display the same date.

When the design changes after an initial review, record the change and ask what validation work it affects. Keep the final report connected to the delivered baseline. An earlier assessment should retain its original identity rather than being relabelled as evidence for an altered system.

Frequently asked buying questions

Does validation choose the safety functions?

The public scope refers to specified functions. Make the responsibility for specification clear and provide the agreed inputs before commissioning the validation work.

Is a commissioning checklist the same deliverable?

Compare its actual scope with the contracted validation assignment. The title of a record is insufficient to establish what analysis or testing it covers.

Should I buy the draft successor instead?

The linked product is the published 2012 edition. Keep development documents separate from the agreed published assessment basis.
