How we work

European standards by industry

Repair, Maintenance & Installation Services Standards (EN & ISO)

Repair, maintenance and installation standards help organisations specify service processes, information access and personnel competence. The relevant documents depend on the asset and work involved. A management-system certificate or terminology standard does not establish that a repair is safe, legally compliant or fit for service.

Define the Work and Required Evidence

Start with the asset, manufacturer's information and task-specific risks. Define responsibility for diagnosis, isolation, repair, testing and return to service. Use standards to support those decisions, alongside applicable national rules, required qualifications and the client's specification.

✅ Service Quality

ISO 9001 supports quality-management processes, including customer requirements and corrective action. Certification does not warrant each individual repair.

👷 Occupational Safety

ISO 45001 provides an occupational health and safety management framework. It does not supply an equipment-specific isolation or maintenance procedure.

🚗 Technical Data

ISO 18541 concerns standardised access to automotive repair and maintenance information. Check the vehicle category, relevant part and security-access conditions.

Essential Standards for Service Providers

Select references by the service and asset. The following documents have different purposes:

StandardTitle / ScopeKey Application
ISO 9001Quality-management systemsManaging service processes and requirements.
ISO 45001Occupational health and safety managementManaging work-related risks; not a machine-specific procedure.
ISO 18541 seriesAccess to automotive repair and maintenance informationInformation-system and access requirements; check vehicle scope.
ISO 16311 seriesMaintenance and repair of concrete structuresAssessment and repair references; select the relevant part.
EN 13306Maintenance terminologyCommon definitions; not a maintenance schedule or life-extension test.
EN 15628Qualification of maintenance personnelCompetence requirements for defined maintenance roles; not a universal trade licence.

Apply Standards to Specific Responsibilities

Connect each standard to a defined process or evidence requirement, and verify practical competence separately.

  • Quality: Define acceptance criteria, keep job records and review repeat defects; quantify improvements rather than assuming higher margins.
  • Safe work: Assign competent personnel and task-specific controls for electrical, mechanical, height and other hazards.
  • Information access: Distinguish manufacturers' legal RMI duties from a repairer's permissions, identity checks and use of the information.
  • Asset management: Base maintenance on condition, use and manufacturer requirements. EN 13306 defines terms; using it does not itself extend equipment life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ISO 9001 applicable to small repair shops?

Yes. ISO 9001 can be used by organisations of different sizes. A repair business can apply it to customer requirements, job records, supplier control and corrective action. The scope should match the services delivered; implementation or certification does not guarantee identical outcomes for every job.

What is ISO 18541?

The ISO 18541 series concerns standardised access to vehicle repair and maintenance information. Part 1 includes defined use cases and security-related access arrangements for light passenger and light commercial vehicles. EU access obligations arise from vehicle legislation, including Regulation (EU) 2018/858, rather than from a repair shop simply claiming ISO 18541 compliance. Check the applicable category, access conditions and current legal text.

How do standards improve maintenance safety?

ISO 45001 helps organise risk management but does not prescribe a complete lockout/tagout procedure for each machine. Electrical-operation standards such as EN 50110 have their own scope. Competent people must plan the task using applicable law, manufacturer information and a suitable safe system of work, including control of hazardous energy where required. A certificate cannot guarantee that injuries will not occur.

Scope and Official Sources

For quality or occupational-safety management-system support, describe your ISO project. For a defined test or another specialist requirement, choose the relevant route. State the asset, country and required deliverable.
